Amit Shah Takes a Swipe at Kejriwal, Suggests AAP May Exit Opposition Alliance Post Delhi Services Bill Approval
During a debate in the Rajya Sabha concerning the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, Union home minister Amit Shah took a jab at both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Shah remarked that the AAP, which was initially formed to counter the Congress, might reconsider its position within the I.N.D.I.A bloc after the bill’s passage. The I.N.D.I.A bloc, a coalition of opposition parties established in 2022 to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), includes the Congress, AAP, Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena, and Nationalist Congress Party.
A focal point of Shah’s retort was the opposition’s criticism of the Delhi services bill, which the Lok Sabha approved last week. This bill grants the central government authority over the appointment and transfer of senior civil servants in Delhi.
Opposition parties argue that the bill infringes on the constitution and diminishes the elected Delhi government’s powers. They further accuse the BJP of attempting to weaken the AAP administration in Delhi.

In defense of the bill, Shah stressed its necessity for ensuring effective and corruption-free governance in Delhi. He contended that the bill aligns with the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding Delhi government powers.
Shah’s remarks have the potential to intensify political tensions between the BJP and opposition parties, with the bill expected to be a key matter in the upcoming general election.
Apart from addressing the Delhi services bill, Shah leveled various allegations against the AAP administration. He accused them of corruption, irregular cabinet meetings, and encroaching on central government powers.
The AAP refuted these allegations, maintaining that the Delhi services bill is unconstitutional and expressing intent to contest it in court.
As the Delhi services bill remains a significant political concern in India, its fate in the Rajya Sabha and the possibility of legal challenges await observation.
