Fire at AIIMS Delhi’s Endoscopy Room, Prompt Evacuation Ensures No Casualties

Aug 7, 2023

A fire broke out at the renowned All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi today, August 7, 2023. The incident occurred in the endoscopy room on the second floor of the Old OPD building, directly above the emergency ward. Quick action by the authorities, along with the arrival of six fire tenders, ensured that the fire was brought under control within an hour. All patients and staff in the vicinity were safely evacuated, preventing any casualties.

The alarming incident unfolded at AIIMS Delhi when a fire erupted in the endoscopy room around 11:54 am. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, but preliminary reports suggest a potential short circuit as the source. Investigations into the exact cause are underway.

Thanks to the prompt response of the fire department and the hospital staff, the situation was contained, averting any loss of life. Although the emergency ward at AIIMS Delhi has been temporarily closed until further notice, the rest of the hospital continues to operate.

Unfortunately, this is the second fire incident at AIIMS Delhi in recent months. In May 2023, a fire broke out in the radiology department, but it was successfully controlled without any casualties.

The incident has raised concerns, and the Delhi Fire Services has issued crucial advice to hospitals. They emphasize the importance of adopting preventive measures to avoid such accidents in the future. Hospital authorities are urged to conduct regular fire drills, ensure the proper maintenance of electrical equipment, and invest in the installation of fire alarms.

The incident serves as a wake-up call for all medical facilities to prioritize fire safety and preparedness. By implementing the suggested measures, hospitals can protect their patients, staff, and invaluable infrastructure from potential fire hazards.

The fire incident at AIIMS Delhi has once again highlighted the significance of fire safety in medical facilities. Swift action by the authorities ensured that all patients and staff were safely evacuated. Hospitals across the region are urged to learn from this event and take proactive steps to prevent fire accidents. By prioritizing fire safety, medical institutions can create a safer environment for everyone and continue providing essential healthcare services without disruption.
