Alert: Yamuna River Water Level Surpasses Warning Mark in Delhi Once Again

Aug 15, 2023

New Delhi: Witnessed a concerning situation as the water level of the Yamuna River surged beyond the warning mark of 204.50 meters due to intense rainfall in the river’s upper catchment regions over the past 48 hours.

According to data from the Central Water Commission’s website, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge climbed from 203.48 meters at 3 pm on Monday to 204.94 meters at 6 pm on Tuesday.

In Haryana’s Yamunanagar district, the flow rate at the Hathnikund barrage was measured at 30,153 cusecs, a moderate figure typical during the monsoon season. Officials from the Delhi government’s irrigation and flood control department highlighted that while there might be minor flooding at a few spots along the river, a severe crisis is unlikely.

The recent rains have wreaked havoc in various parts of the country. Himachal Pradesh reported at least 53 casualties due to the damage caused by heavy rainfall since Sunday. Uttarakhand also suffered from torrential downpours, resulting in building destruction and landslides that disrupted national highways leading to Badrinath, Kedarnath, and Gangotri shrines.

Caution Yamuna River Level Exceeds Cautionary Point in Delhi, Again

The impact of the rain has led to multiple rivers overflowing. The Ganga River has surpassed the danger mark in Tehri, Haridwar, and Rishikesh. Similarly, the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers are flowing above the danger level in Rudraprayag, Srinagar, and Devprayag, as reported by Uttarakhand’s Dehradun disaster control room.

Recalling events from mid-July, New Delhi faced unprecedented flooding due to heavy rainfall both within the city and in the upper catchment areas of the Yamuna River. On July 13, the Yamuna rose to a record-breaking 208.66 meters, breaching its previous high and causing more extensive inundation within the city than observed in over four decades.

During the floods, more than 27,000 individuals were evacuated, and substantial losses were incurred in terms of property, businesses, and earnings, amounting to significant financial impact.

The water level remained above the danger mark of 205.33 meters for a continuous period of eight days, starting from July 10.

Experts attribute the flooding in New Delhi to factors like encroachments on the river’s floodplain, intense rainfall over a short duration, and the accumulation of silt that elevated the riverbed.

The Yamuna river system’s catchment encompasses regions in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Delhi.

Areas near the Yamuna River’s banks in Delhi, inhabited by approximately 41,000 residents, are particularly susceptible to flooding. Despite the land being under the jurisdiction of the Delhi Development Authority, the revenue department, and private individuals, encroachments on the river’s floodplain have continued over the years.

Among the city’s districts, the northeast, east, central, and southeast areas are most affected by flooding. A comprehensive study on “Urban Flooding and its Management” conducted by the irrigation and flood control department has identified east Delhi as a flood-prone region highly vulnerable to such incidents.
