Dharmashastra National Law University (DNLU), Jabalpur Introduces Menstrual Leave Policy for Students

Oct 3, 2023

Jabalpur, Oct 1 2023 – In a significant move, Dharmashastra National Law University (DNLU), Jabalpur, has introduced a menstrual leave policy for its female students on campus. This development comes in response to a longstanding request from the Student Bar Association (SBA) and aims to support female students during their menstrual cycles.

The official circular issued on Friday outlined the new policy, allowing full-time female students at DNLU to avail of leave for difficulties they may face during their menstrual cycle. Previously, the university allowed students to take leave for up to 36 lectures per semester (equivalent to 6 classes for each of the 6 subjects). With this new policy, female students can now use these leaves to address menstrual cycle-related challenges.

The circular clarifies, “It is hereby notified that full-time female students of the university can avail the general make-up for the loss of classes occasioned due to menstrual cycle. Rules relating to the general make-up, such as the number of days, i.e., 6 classes per subject per semester, will remain the same as notified and practiced in the university at present.”

The authority responsible for approving these leaves will be the Dean of Student Welfare.

A representative from the Student Bar Association, Jelsyna Chacko, explained the challenges they faced in advocating for menstrual leave, stating, “The main challenge was to make the authorities understand why these leaves are necessary and not discriminatory against male students. Initially, there was some resistance from the authorities since not everyone is very open-minded about menstruation and, in general, people were of the view that it would be discriminatory towards male counterparts. SBA had many conversations with the administration to make them understand why it is necessary to have menstrual leaves.”

Kartik Jain, a former Vice-President of the SBA, outlined how the policy would operate, saying, “There are already six criteria in the make-up leave policy. They have now added menstrual leave as one of the reasons for students to avail the make-up leave.” He expressed gratitude to the DNLU administration for their cooperation, emphasizing that this initiative was possible due to the hard work and persistence of DNLU students.

This move by DNLU follows its earlier headline-making decision to introduce audio-visual learning for students, positioning it as the first National Law University to implement such an approach.

Bar & Bench has reached out to the DNLU administration for their statement on this groundbreaking initiative among law schools. This article will be updated with their response.

On a related note, Indian law firm Khaitan & Co recently announced the introduction of a menstrual leave policy for its women employees, set to take effect from October 1.
